The territory
The city overlooks the Adriatic Sea for a coastline of approximately 7.5 km.
The municipal territory, mainly flat, slides towards the sea furrowed by ancient blades, the city is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with mild continental winters and hot, dry summers.
It has been inhabited since the Paleolithic, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds, some of which have come down to us relatively intact, such as the dolmens: megalithic monuments having the function of tomb-altars. The most famous of them, the Dolmen della Chianca, is located about 5 km from the town centre.
There is also a numerous presence of Casali, small residential agglomerations, often fortified, whose inhabitants later flocked to the medieval village built on the sea and equipped, at different times, with guard and defense towers, a Castle(Norman era) and walls and bastions (Aragonese era). The churches in Romanesque-Apulian style are also valuable, among which the beauty of the Bisceglie Cathedral emerges, from which all the streets of the ancient city depart and arrive, both to and from the sea (to the port) and from and to the countryside (outside the ancient walls, most of which are still visible).
The most suggestive area, the one that is recommended to a tourist curious about artistic beauty, remains, therefore, the ancient village.
